3.2.3- Grammar: The present simple affirmative

1) Read the dialogue  and write true or false, then correct the false statements

Sam: Who are these?

Adam: They’re my brothers, Ayman and Badr.

Sam: And are these your parents?

Adam: Yes, this is my father; his name is Mohamed. And this is my mother; her name’s Fatna. They live in    Tangiers. My father is a doctor and he works in a hospital. My mother works in a bank.

 

1- Ayman and Badr are Adam's cousins.

2- Mohamed works in a bank.

3-  Fatna and Mohamed live in Mohammedia.

4- Adam’s mother works in a hospital.

Grammar rules:

1. Regular verbs

Normally in the present simple tense we add s to the end of the verb in the 3rd person (He, She, It).

 Speak => Speaks

 Play => Plays

 Give => Gives

 Make  => Makes

 

    • My brother speaks three languages.

    • Samira drinks coffee every morning.

    • My dog hates my cat.

 

2. Irregular Verbs

1. If the verb ends in ss, x, ch, sh or the letter o, we add + es in the third person (he, she, it).

 

Fix  => Fixes

Watch  => Watches

Crash  => Crashes

Go  => Goes

 

A mechanic fixes cars.

My mother watches TV every afternoon.

Tom kisses his wife before he goes to work.

 

2. If the verb ends in a Consonant + y, we remove the y and add + ies in the third person singular.

Carry => carries

Hurry => hurries

Study  => studies

Deny  => denies

Cry => cries

Isabel studies every night.

The baby cries all the time.

He denies all responsibility.
